It is with great sorrow that we have been advised of the death of one of Hutt Valley Badminton’s Life Members, Olga Conner, on the 14th of April.
Olga’s involvement with badminton has spanned more than 50 years. She started in Upper Hutt where she was involved in senior badminton as a player and administrator, and set up the Upper Hutt Junior Club, which she ran until she was well into her 80s.
She became a valued member of the Association Committee over 40 years ago and was still active until hip replacement surgery and other medical problems curtailed her involvement. Her roles on the Association covered Presidency, Chairmanship, tournaments, coaching and involvement with the Junior Committee. Olga was also a member of the Court Officials Committee.
Olga became more involved with badminton when her daughter, Margaret, became a representative player for both the Hutt Valley and New Zealand. Her interest remained as her grandsons, Chris and Stephen Lee, started playing. Even after her activities were curtailed she remained a keen follower of both badminton and tennis.
As a keen gardener and lover of fuchsias (and a member of the Fuchsia Society of NZ) one could never visit Olga at her Upper Hutt home without a garden tour, frequently accompanied by a large cat. If you were lucky you were sent home with a pot or two of cuttings.
While her body may have been letting her down Olga’s mind was as sharp as a tack and she always looked forward to the annual Christmas get-together with the Committee.
She will be sorely missed.
